International Undergraduate Program in AutomationCollege of Control Science and Engineering, Zhejiang University1.   Program OverviewZhejiang University (ZJU) is one of China’s top higher education institutions, as well as one of its oldest; its roots can be traced back to 1897 and the founding of the Qiushi Academy. Laying claim to several areas of research strength, ZJU currently ranks among the top three on Chinese mainland. ZJU ranks 45th in the QS World University Rankings 2022, 6th in the QS Asia University Rankings 2022, and 27th for Engineering & Technology in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2021. The engineering programs of Zhejiang University ranked 4th in the World Best Global Universities Rankings published by US News & World Report in 2016.Hangzhou, “the City of Heaven”, is the base of ZJU and was Marco Polo’s favorite city in China. It is a city with 800-year history and a hub for innovation―the base for the e-commerce giant Alibaba. It is also home to venture capital funds, big data firms, and hundreds of technology-linked companies. It was the host of the 2016 G20 Summit, and it will also host the 2022 Asian Games.  The major of Automation at ZJU can be traced back to 1956. The Department of Control Science & Engineering (or CSE, renamed as the College of CSE in 2012) was established in 1993, which hosts of the Automation undergraduate major since then. For more than 60 years, ZJU’s Automation discipline has established a well-organized framework which leverages fundamental research and industrial applications as well as technological commercialization. It has played a unique role in the development of industrial automation of China manufacturing, especially the process industry. In the information-rich era, the emphasis of Automation has been extended to more important areas besides industrial automation, including Industrial Intelligence & Optimization Control, Smart Sensing & Instrumentation, Robotics & Intelligent Unmanned Systems, Cyber Security of Control Systems. Currently, the CSE is one of the most prestigious research and education bases in the area of industrial process control in China. In 2017, the CSE has been selected for the national Double First-class Initiative and graded as a national A+ discipline (ONLY 3 universities overall in China) in the national assessment.  The CSE’s core areas of research include:Industrial Intelligence and Optimization ControlIndustrial Big Data, Knowledge Automation, Large-scale System Optimization, Distributed Coordinated Control, Intelligent Manufacturing, Smart Factory, etc.Robotics and Intelligent Unmanned SystemsPerception, Planning, Control, Coordination, Learning and Decision, etc.Cyber Security and Safety for Industrial Control SystemsCyber Security, Industrial Internet Security, Networking Security, Intrusion Detection and Evaluation, Security Protection and Defense, Fault Diagnosis and Health Management, Safety Management & Assessment, Industrial Safety & Security Protocol, Cryptography and Security Algorithms, etc.Smart Sensing and MeasurementIntelligent Perception, Biology Perception, Intelligence Evaluation and Early Warning, Highly Adaptable Optical Detection, High-precision Microfluidic Analysis, Micro-nano Detection Technology and Instrument, Quantum Perception, Quantum Computing and Measurement and Control, etc. A number of national and international research labs and centers are instituted within the CSE.Research Institutes・ Institute of Smart Sensing and Measurement・ Institute of Cyber-systems and ControlNational Research Labs/Centers・ The National Engineering Research Center for Industrial Automation・ The National Engineering Lab of Industrial Control System Security Technology・ The International-Joint Research Centre of Quality-targeted Process Optimization and ControlOverseas Academician Joint Labs・ Control and System Security・ Intelligent Robotics By 2021, there are 100 full-time faculty members with 54 full professors and research fellows in the broad area of Automation, more than 500 registered undergraduates and 700 students pursuing Master Degree and Ph.D. Degree, more than 30 among whom are degree-seeking international students. 2.   Program CharacteristicsThe Undergraduate Program in Automation adopts “3+1” mode, i.e., students would spend the first three years studying at the International Campus, Zhejiang University (Haining, Zhejiang) to finish the foundational courses. In the fourth year, students would move to Yuquan Campus, Zhejiang University (Hangzhou, Zhejiang) to complete the final-year project and other required courses. The ZJU International Campus in Haining City has adopted a model of creating Joint Institutes with partner universities, and Joint Institutes have already been successfully established with the University of Edinburgh and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (ZJU-UoE and ZJU-UIUC Institutes) and Imperial College London (ZJU-Imperial Joint Lab for Applied Data Science). Haining City is known for its leather industry and spectacular tide in the Qiantang River. It serves as the core of the Greater Hangzhou Bay Rim Area, and it benefits from the “one-hour economic circle” of Shanghai, Hangzhou and Suzhou with a well-developed transportation network (http://en.wikipedia.nym.mx/wiki/Haining).This program encourages students to develop broad outlooks and allows them to take subjects in related technical fields, such as Sensor and Instrumentation, Big Data Security and Privacy Preserving, Computer Systems Engineering, Data Structure, Computer Security, Artificial Intelligence, or Introduction to Robotics. This program also allows students to take a combination of subjects that lead to specialization options in Control Science and Engineering, Big Data and Artificial Intelligence or Robotics and Intelligent Manufacturing. The International Joint Research Centre, global top tertiary institutions/partners, and distinguished faculty with overseas experiences provide rich faculty resources for program students. Student learning is supplemented by a variety of laboratory, training and project activities. Students also develop scientific research and problem-solving skills through the final-year project under the guidance of eminent supervisors. Seminars, industrial visits and overseas study tours are also available to broaden students' horizons. A plenty of academic pathways and opportunities to outstanding graduates will be provided to the students, leading them to worldwide top universities as well as ZJU postgraduate program. 3.   Program Aims & Learning OutcomesThis program is an ideal choice for those who wish to pursue studies in Industrial Automation, System Control, and Robotics. It addresses latest technologies and their applications in control science and engineering, enabling students to explore new technology innovations to serve social demands.  This program is designed to provide students with sound personality, consolidated knowledge of natural science as well as overall capacity of humanity and social science. Students are expected to acquire: ・ consolidated fundamental theory, specialized knowledge and technology of automation and related fields; ・ ability to propose questions and solve problems in automation and related fields; ・ capability to track and develop new theory, knowledge and technologies in automation and related fields; ・ good ability in independent work and lifelong learning; ・ good ability in communication and teamwork; ・ good international perspective, innovative spirit, and worldwide competitiveness in automation and related fields.  4.   CurriculumThis program curriculum is sophistically designed in terms of courses, labs, research trainings and internships. All the courses are instructed in the medium of English (Chinese language courses are excluded).  The 4-year curriculum focuses on principles and methods for designing and controlling engineered and natural systems, covering all the major aspects of control engineering, systems modeling and simulation, with applications ranging from classical control system design to optimal adaptive and intelligent control systems. It also emphasizes the multidisciplinary character of the field and specific areas of interest including automation technology, instrument technology, information technology, computer technology and robotic technology. Year 1 Students complete the first year of fundamental studies within the broadening engineering discipline, with a focus on underpinning subjects (such as Science and Mathematics), Languages (English Composition and Chinese), and General Education Electives. The Chinese language courses and the course of Survey of China include basic linguistics, Chinese modern history, social development, government policies, etc., which not only help international students to get used to Chinese society in a short time but also prepare them for future endeavors in China after graduation.    Year 2 In Year 2, curriculum focuses on the fundamentals of engineering. A series of Technical Core and Elective subjects are involved at this stage, including System Modeling and Simulation, Computer System & Programming, Analog Signal Processing, Discrete Structure and Data Structure.   Year 3The Year 3 curriculum attaches great importance to compulsory core subjects in Automation, Control Science and Labs. The focus is on consolidating the fundamentals, teamwork and laboratory experiments.  Year 4Students take advanced Elective subjects and carry out final-year project at Yuquan campus in the 4th year. The final-year project provides a comprehensive learning experience in automation engineering technology, problem-solving techniques and creative thinking. The 7th ZJU Graduate International Summer School on“Distributed Control, Optimization and Learning”Was Successfully Held

From August 2 to 13, 2021, the ZJU Graduate International Summer School on Distributed Control, Optimization and Learning, organized by the Network Sensing and Control Research Group, College of Control Science and Engineering, Zhejiang University, was successfully held in the Yuquan Campus. The summer school consists of 9 guest lectures and 7 seminars delivered by leading research scholars from Zhejiang University, Chinese University of Hong Kong, Tufts University, Rice University, Arizona State University, Purdue University, Carleton University, Nanyang Technological University, Pennsylvania State University, Nankai University and Alibaba Damo Academy, respectively. This event attracts more than 200 graduate students from the worldwide. The summer school is designed with two modules. The first module is dedicated to the teaching of basic knowledge in the field of distributed control and optimization, while the second module is for bringing students frontier advanced topics related to distributed optimization. This summer school adopted the combination of online and offline teaching, with offline teaching mainly for students of Zhejiang University and online teaching for students from other universities.Offline participationOnline participationThe opening ceremony on August 2 marked the start of the event. Professor Jinming Xu from the College of Control Science and Engineering of Zhejiang University presided over the opening ceremony and taught the first class, introducing some basic knowledge of convex optimization and explaining his profound understanding of optimization theory. Professor Xu's vivid explanation stimulated students' interest in distributed control and optimization, and the following courses and activities were carried out very smoothly. In the first week of the basic courses, the professors gave a detailed explanation of convex optimization, graph theory and consistency, distributed stochastic optimization, large-scale machine learning, distributed control and other related basic knowledge.In the second week of the lecture, Professor Gesualdo Scutari from Purdue University introduced some new ideas and novel analyses of distributed optimization from the statistical perspective, and pointed out the underlying reasons for the failure of distributed learning in high-dimensional scenarios and the mismatch between experimental results and theoretical analysis. Professor Usman Khan from Tufts University introduced a novel algorithm framework that enables distributed learning on non-convex optimization problems, and demonstrated the reliability of his proposed method with provable theoretical results and numerical experiments with real data. Professor Cesar Uribe from Rice University explained the optimal complexity of distributed optimization algorithms, introduced a scalable algorithm that can achieve the same convergence rate as centralized counterparts, and shared some interesting application examples of distributed optimization and learning. Professor Lihua Xie from Nanyang Technological University introduced a complete set of smart sensing and localization technologies for IoT and unmanned systems, such as WiFi-based indoor positioning and human activity recognition, UWB-based positioning, and Visual-Inertial-Distance sensor fusion for positioning and mapping, and their wide interesting applications in various domains. Last but not the least, Professor Hoi To Wai from Chinese University of Hong Kong introduced the recent techniques for optimizing distributed nonconvex models  that process batch/streaming data, and explained how to balance communication and computation complexity to design efficient algorithms. Professor Shichao Liu from Carleton University introduced a co-design scheme that properly combines distributed control and event-triggered scheduling so as to meet the challenges of load frequency control in multi-area smart grid. These informative and wonderful lectures and seminars left a deep impression on the students, which would be beneficial to their own research!In addition to the impressive online lectures, the summer school also provided lab visits and academic seminars for the students. During the lab visits, Professor Xu led the students to visit the smart micro-grid laboratory, industrial control safety laboratory (involving PLC, mechanical arm safety) and anti-aerial-robotic systems laboratory, which helped students have a deep understanding of intelligent micro-grid technology, industrial control system attack and defense technology, and anti-anti-aerial-robotic technology based on multi-sensor fusion, and have a further understanding of the engineering application of distributed control and optimization.Students of Zhejiang University participated in lab visitsThis summer school is an important measure for the School of Control Science and Engineering of Zhejiang University to build a world-class discipline and promote the level of internationalization.
